U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad
Each year, more 10,000 high school students nationwide take local exams hoping to win a place on the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad team.
The process begins in the spring when American Chemical Society (ACS) Local Sections conduct local competitions and choose their nominees for the national competition.
Approximately 1,000 students then sit for the annual 3-part national exam. According to the exam rules, no more than two students from any given school can compete in the national competition. In Georgia, 13 students will compete at Kennesaw State University on April 19. Brandon Smalls from LaGrange Academy will be one of these 13. Trae Long, also from LaGrange Academy, qualified but will be unable to compete due to prior commitments.
From those exams, 20 students are selected to participate at a study camp, held each June at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. Based on their performance at the study camp, four students are selected to represent the United States at the International Chemistry Olympiad.
Congratulations to Brandon and Trae!
