A native of West Hartford, Connecticut, Matt Walsh graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University in 1991 with a major in French and a minor in English. In 1993, he was one of 50 new teachers nationwide selected to participate in the Klingenstein Summer Institute at Teachers College, Columbia University. He earned a masters degree in Spanish from Middlebury College in 1995
Mr. Walsh began his independent school career in 1991 at Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where he taught French and Spanish, served as modern language department chair, and coached basketball and soccer. Mr. Walsh subsequently served as Upper School Principal at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida and at Visitation Academy, an all girls school in St. Louis, Missouri.
Mr. Walsh is the author of “The Intangibles: Advice for New and Aspiring Heads,” which appears in the Fall 2010 edition of Independent School Magazine and is expected to appear in the Handbook for New Heads, both of which are publications of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). He has served as Headmaster of LaGrange Academy since 2006. He and his wife, Janet, are the parents of three children: Kate, Ayla, and John. Kate is a third grader at LaGrange Academy.
